I dove into this book and read it in two days. Enjoyed every moment of the ride. If I had to give a critique, I would say the opening prologue dragged and the first chapter took until halfway through to get its footing. After that, it just flowed from start to finish and I could not put it down.

Vanished by Joseph Finder is absolutely terrific for the first 9/10th of the book. It is a real page turner, and I found myself up late at night to read yet another chapter. However, the resolution was ridiculously contrived, totally unbelievable and frankly destroyed the entire effect of the book on me. The main characters are well thought out, but the two wealthy antagonists never come to life. Had Finder found a more reasonable end, I would have easily given the book five glowing stars, but the end he chose made me want to toss the book out the window. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed most of the book and simply wish that Mr. Finder had found a more believable culmination, one that would have stayed true to the thrust of the premise. Rasputin's Nephew: The Rudy Styne Quadrilogy Book I

Finder is looking to establish a Bourne (as the movies portray him) or Reacher character here and I shall read the other of the 2 that sre the first installments of the franchise and probably the next. I read a lot of this type of escapist writing including Jo Nesbo, Stieg Larsson, et al so this is an endorsement for people like me who like a good yarn of Daring Do and read fast. I will not read these a second time, unless Finder get good as I have Child (Reacher) or Larsson (Salander/Blomkvist).See I don't really recall much to recount for review except the main character Nick is trying to find his brother who he doesn't like very much mostly because his nephew wants him to. It seems much of this book to establish Nick's back story, to establish that Nick is alienated and trusts few people even those related to him.

I "found" Joseph Finder and enjoy his work. It's detailed private detective-type work, the plots are of interest, and the characters drawn out decently. There's the standard implausibility in most of these works, but it you treat it as a satisfying plane or beach read you'll be rewarded with an escape from the work around you, which is what these books should provide. The women are always gorgeous, the crooks malevolent, and the hero incorruptible. But you knew that anyway, right?

I needed something to read on an airplane, and found the second book in this series -- Buried Secrets -- and thought it was really well done. The second I finished I wanted to get the other Nick Heller book (there are currently two in the series). Vanished is the 1st book in the series, and it is not as good. But it is not terrible, either -- it has solid writing with a solid storyline and for the most part, a somewhat believable context. There are no huge gaps in logic (a killer for me in a mystery). I typically like the writing of Michael Connelly (for his storylines and overall realism). This, at times is a little more cartoonish, but the storyline holds together (maybe a little predictable). Nick Heller is a nice-enough hero, although the character could be more developed (and is more developed in the second novel in the series). Not sure its worth full retail price, but certainly solid enough to keep you reading once you start.

I found this book almost impossible to put down. I took it everywhere with me.Others have written about the story line, so I won't spend much time on it. 14 year old Gabe Heller calls his uncle, Nick, when his father and mother, Roger and Lauren, are attacked outside of a restaurant. Lauren is in a coma for 24 hours, Roger has disappeared and Gabe is distraught.Nick is one cool hero. He is the exact opposite of his brother and father, both of whom are financial wizards. Nick is a Special Forces vet who now works as a private investigator for a DC firm. If I ever got into trouble, Nick is the person I would want on my side. He is calm, cool, collected, competent and a lot of people owe him favors. This book has many turns and twists. I will admit that I wasn't totally surprised by the outcome, but there were enough, "No way!s" to cause me to put the book down with great reluctance. This is one of Finder's best yet and I hope we haven't seen the last of Nick Heller.I highly recommend this fast paced page turner - just be sure you have a day or two with little else to do because you won't want to stop reading once you start.

As an introduction to Nick Heller's background, family & makeup, this story worked well. Although it took some time to develop pace because of that, it grew in intensity. The hints toward the primary plot resolution were still cleverly overshadowed by how Finder got there.I look forward to filling Nick Heller further.

Characters: Very good. Storyline: Very good. Writing Style: Very good.Storyline based on Blackwater? If so, it's very scary. Anyway, I highly recommend this author and will continue reading the Nick Heller Series. (Alongside Bosch, Reacher, Whitefield etc.)

Have to agree with the Publishers Weekly review. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. This faint praise is particularly poignant because all of his previous books were fabulous. I saw the ending coming a mile away. Also, I listened to the audio book version. The reader's voices were really, really, really annoying. Nick Heller's voice was okay, but his SIL and nephew whined their way through the entire book. And it was hard to tell which was which. The voices were almost identical. Everytime they came on, I cringed, and they are on almost every track. So, if you are inclined to read this book, pick up the hardback or paperback. Leave the audio edition on the shelf. This was the first in a series of books about Nick Heller. Let's hope in the future stories that Finder reestablishes the intrigue, complex characters and psychological thrills that he exhibited in his previous works.
